What are the best airgun pellets? Mike Morton tests some top picks

Wondering what airgun pellets to be taking a look at? Wonder no more, as Mike Morton has been running a regular test of the best…

Rifle Premium Series Round .177

Rifle Premium Series Round .177

Manufactured by Brazilian company Rifle (www.rifle.ind.br) these roundhead diablos have a distinctively squashed look to them, but they work extremely well. The range is also available in wadcutter and pointed pellets.

Mike says: “Rifle Premium Series rounds are marketed as being suitable for HFT or Field Target, but with accuracy like this you can happily add hunting to that list.”

Bisley Super Field

Bisley Super Field

An acorn-shaped hollowpoint diablo, this pellet has also been around for a long time. Thanks to a raised ridge that runs around the circumference of
the head, Bisly claim it offers “improved drive in the barrel”, but does it live up to the claim?

Mike says: “If you’re a shooter who’s not afraid to try something completely different, you could be in for a super time if you give the Super Fields a go.”

JSB Hades

JSB Hades

These super-heavyweight pellets are made from softer lead, with a pattern carved into the domehead that will help them spread on impact, making them ideal hunting pellets.

Mike says: “Hades pellets pass the five pence piece test, making them a definite contender for any hunter’s ammunition hit list and proving domeheads don’t all need to be smooth to display ballistic brilliance.”

RWS Super Field

RWS Super Field

A firm favourite of top-flight Field Target and HFT shooters over the years, if there were an Airgun Hall of Fame, this pellet would have earned its place long ago. But how does it stack up against other more modern pellets?

Mike says: “Super Fields may have an unconventional head design, but shoot them through the right barrel and they truly are super.”

Rifle Premium Series Round .22

Rifle Premium Series Round .22

As well as trying out the .177 version. Mike turned his hand to the .22. Weighing in at a whopping 18.67 grains per pellet (two-and-a-half times the
weight of the .177) these are quite a different beast.

Mike says: “Rifle Premium Series Round are a bit heavy to push the range too far in a non-FAC airgun, but for short- and mid-range hunting they offer plenty of accuracy as well as killer knockdown potential.”

QYS Pointed

Small yet perfectly formed, these 8.5 grain pointed diabolos forced Mike to reconsider his lifelong prejudice about pointed pellets: he never believed these hunting-specific pellets could be accurate—not until he tested these.

Mike says: “If you want a hunting pellet that offers deeper penetration as well as accuracy, then you might find yourself rather pleasantly surprised by the QYS Pointed”

Weihrauch Magnum

Available in both .177 and .22, these heavyweight pellets are best described as domehead diablos, though the head is slightly pointed. They are
excellent, and suitable for all kinds of shooting.

Mike says: “Accuracy is vital for target shooters, hunters and plinkers, and the Weihrauch Magnum is more than capable of delivering great results for all three types of shooting.”
