Winchester made a name for itself back in the 1860s with its repeating lever-action rifles, and went on to create the equally iconic Model 70 bolt-action sporting rifle in 1936.

The Winchester name has managed to cross the divide from centrefires to airguns, and we now have the Winchester Model 55RS, a spring-powered break-barrel that’s very much inspired by the Model 70.

The Model 55RS, which costs £269, is a scope-only rifle, and comes with a riser rail. The riser rail could be very useful depending on your own physical build and scope choice, while smaller shooters can simply remove it and fit their scope to the regular dovetail underneath.

The barrel of the RS is fairly short at 32.5cm, and comes fitted with a moderator, making it easier to cock. The RS also has a metal trigger guard and trigger blade, which you don’t always find on rifles of this price.

Centre of balance is near-perfect on the RS, being just in front of the trigger guard with the scope fitted. It’s accurate too, with the .177 test rifle punching one-hole groups with ease at 25 yards using JSB Exact pellets.

The Winchester Model 55RS is a fast-handling and lightweight rifle – and will deliver a level of accuracy that far exceeds its relatively modest asking price.
