When The Game Fair marks its 60th anniversary with a 60-gun salute in the main arena this year, it will also be sending out a message, loud and clear, about the scope and scale of its offer to shooting enthusiasts of all abilities.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Ragley Hall in Warwickshire from Friday 27 July to Sunday 29 July, the three-day annual festival of the great British countryside boasts the most comprehensive outdoor shooting exhibition held anywhere in the UK.
From clay to airgun shooting, have-a-go events for novices, masterclasses galore, trick-shooting demonstrations and exciting competitions with some of the best clay shooters in the UK, The Game Fair 2018 will have a jam-packed itinerary and there will be something for everyone. We’ve picked out some of the highlights:
The Subaru Shooting Line
The largest of its kind in Europe, it stretches out for more than half a kilometre and provides the whole family with an opportunity to get involved. Simply laid out so it’s easy to get around, this is the place to be for have-a-go and tuition, with the Shooting Arena taking pride of place in the middle of the line.
The Shooting Arena
The centre stage of the Subaru Shooting Line, located opposite the Ragley Hall stately home and overlooking an avenue of beach trees and landscaped gardens. The Shooting Arena is home to display shooting, trick-shots, demonstrations, masterclasses by a world champion clay shooter, heritage shooting and nail-biting finals of all the main competitions. A grandstand seating for over 130 spectators will be in front of the spacious arena, which will be compèred throughout the weekend by legendary trick shooter and former European FITASC champion Mickey Rouse. Visitors can expect a packed schedule of events covering all three of the days.
The Game Fair Challenge
Held over all three days to mark The Game Fair’s 60th anniversary, the 60-bird sporting clay competition is expected to attract a stellar entry list. Entry costs £28, re-entry is £20, or you can pay £45 for two attempts. There will be prizes each day in Novice and Open classes. If you’d rather watch, this is a great chance to see the best clay shooters in the business battle it out under pressure for the chance to win a Subaru Forester car for a year in the super final on Sunday afternoon.
The Game Fair Knock-Out
A new 25-bird random knock-out competition, consisting of five singles, five on report pairs and five simultaneous pairs, this fun and exciting event consists of Pro and Open class categories. Shooters can secure their place by moving through the qualifying rounds at the shooting grounds in Gloucestershire and Staffordshire. Ten finalists in each class will compete at The Game Fair in a finals day on the Sunday which will be well worth a watch.
Flushes and Pool Shoot
Individuals or two-person teams will have the chance to enter a flush shoot competition for rabbit, crazy quail, grouse, or high bird. There will be prizes up for grabs each day. For those who are new to clays, the pool shoot competition, shot with a .410 calibre gun, will provide fast-fire fun. For the experienced shooters, it will also be the perfect chance to get your eye in before the bigger competitions.
Champion of Champions
Run by the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (CPSA), this competition brings together the top guns from across England for a spectacular shoot-out in the main arena. The champion shooter from each county is invited to test themselves in a thrilling event that always pulls in a huge crowd and aims to determine who is England’s best of the best.
Colts Challenge
Another CPSA initiative, this competition is a fantastic chance for the best under-16 shooters in the business to impress under pressure. Huge crowds will be drawn in to watch the top ten English sporting colts in the country battling it out in the main arena in front of a packed grandstand.
Pro-Am Charity Shoot
Following its success last year, and in aid of The Game Fair’s official charity, Lord’s Taverners, visitors will be able to bid in advance to take part in the Pro-Am Charity Shoot in conjunction with the CPSA. The winning bidders will be teamed up with the celebrity of their choice and a well-known professional shooter to take on the sporting challenge. Taking place on Saturday afternoon, this competition really pulls in the crowds!
The Airgun Zone
Always a huge favourite with visitors, the Airgun Zone has had an exciting new development this year. The have-a-go areas will be housed under a wooden structure, incorporating challenging and exciting targets. For those who favour long-range, the Air Arms Experience is a 24m-wide range showcasing the various UK target shooting disciplines and will be held in conjunction with British Shooting.
Gunmakers’ Row
The place to view the best and newest products from British gunmakers as well as renowned names from around the world. All of the premier shooting-related companies are here in one place, offering every accessory imaginable from knives to clothing. Sharing a beer in gunmakers’ pub is a great way to relax after all of that shopping.
