Field Target Shooters Back In Action

Good weather, good courses and good company made East Devon Field Target Club’s memorial shoot a huge success.

Chris Jones took an incredible 53-yard standing shot to secure the overall win and some well-deserved silverware

Members of East Devon Field Target Club have held their first competition since lockdown, and although the contest had to be run in accordance with the current Covid-19 restrictions, it attracted plenty of keen shooters – and plenty of real talent.

Competitors taking part in the Max 80 FT Memorial Trophy turned up bright and early for a day that offered decent weather, a perfectly prepared ground and good camaraderie amid like-minded shooters.

The shoot consisted of two separate 40-target FT courses set out in the woods, and competitors had to shoot both, with the combined score counting towards the overall result.

Kerry Squires put in an excellent performance with her Air Arms EV2, and while conditions were generally good, there was a slight wind

The competition consisted of FT, HFT and Open FT class events, with the FT competition attracting an ex-world champion and a former European FT champion, as well as multiple South West champions.

There was a very subtle wind in the woods, and this got stronger as the morning progressed ready to catch out the unwary, but the competition still proved to be extremely close.

Andras Fekete-Moro and Chris Jones both returned an excellent 75 ex 80 in the FT class, while Tony Fouracre and Ian Yeo both tied on 73 ex 80 in the Open FT class. Shoot-offs were required to settle the results.

Like his sister, Kerry’s younger brother Alex Squires is a great shot and is definitely one to watch in the future

The winner of the FT class was Chris Jones of East Devon, whose winning shot was an amazing standing shot taken at a distance of 53 yards to secure the overall win.

Second Place went to Andras Fekete-Moro, while third place was taken by John Martin. Chris Jones also won the Ian Penrose Memorial Trophy for the highest placed East Devon member.

The HFT competition was won by Roy Repton, with Mike Wilcox second and Jake Brooks third. The Open FT class was won by Tony Fouracre after their shoot-off, while Ian Yeo came second, with Tracey Yeo in third place.

Plenty of trophies were waiting to be picked up by the top shooters of the day – and there’ll be plenty more next year too!

The Max 80 FT Memorial Trophy certainly blew away the cobwebs, and will now become an annual event. Would-be entrants are already being urged to make sure Sunday 12 September is kept free for next year’s contest.
