Calling airgunners in Hertfordshire – your local club needs you!

North Herts AWC is a 25-year-old 10-metre airgun club that shoots inside the old changing rooms at Hitchin Swimming Pool in North Hertfordshire. The club offers airgunners a 12-lane pistol and rifle facility which they rent from the local council. Open three times a week, shooter are catered for from county-level training courses right the way down to fun and  ‘have-a-go’ evenings which regularly introduce newcomers to the sport, as well as providing a great venue for local shooters who just want the hobby of airgun shooting in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The club regularly hosts the prestigious Six Counties Championships, too.

Unfortunately, ongoing issues with the building’s condition have resulted in the local council cancelling the lease – and it will sadly see its last airgun pellets fired at the end of September 2014. It’s a real blow to the local airgun community as there are no similar shooting venues in the surrounding vicinity.

Committe member Paul Conder is therefore making a plea to anyone in the local area who may be able to offer the club – or provide him with a lead to find – a new indoor or outdoor site so that one of the county’s long-standing airgun club continues to flourish. If you can help Paul, please either email him at paul.conder@ntlworld.com – or you can call him on 01462 626374.

It will be a real shame to see this club go. I was a member here in the late 90s and a regular visitor now.target shooting is a good sport to take part in for all ages and all the people who have taken part in running this club and the regulars who attend have all ways been friendly and helpful to new members making this not only a place to shoot but also a social place to meet an chat ,share experiences an shoot in a safe environment.personally I work full time and at weekends and there are no other clubs in the area that are open on my days off for air gun shooting.the closure of this venue will be a great blow to my hobby and other shooters in the local area.
