BSA Ultra CLX – first impressions

Mike Morton takes a look at the BSA Ultra CLX – an all-new version of this iconic sporting air rifle that’s available in regular and First Edition formats.

When the BSA Ultra was introduced more than 15 years ago, thousands of shooters around the world instantly fell in love with it due to its ultra-compact proportions and huge accuracy potential. The original Ultra has been tweaked and updated over the years, but BSA has now introduced the Ultra CLX, a brand new variant of this classic PCP.

While the CLX maintains all the advantages of the original Ultra, being small, easy to handle and offering full power, this new super carbine has been designed from the ground up. Key changes include the use of BSA’s new Mono Block platform, reducing the number of components and complexity, while improving reliability and efficiency.

BSA is also using a new multi-shot magazine with the CLX, featuring a higher capacity of 12 pellets in both .177 and .22 calibres. The new mag will not load more than one pellet into the breech, ensuring there’s no unintentional double-loading. There’s also a shot countdown window to let you know how many pellets are remaining.

Air capacity and efficiency have also been improved, giving a significant increase in shot count of up to 50% over the current Ultra SE. The CLX also uses higher-grade materials and components such as a stainless steel pellet probe and a clearer, larger pressure gauge that makes reading the air pressure a lot easier.

Other features include a muzzle brake that’s been designed with airflow in mind, helping to stabilise the pellet as it leaves the barrel, as well as BSA’s legendary cold hammer-forged barrel. In fact, the only major components that are shared with the previous generation of Ultra rifles are BSA’s “Bolas” bolt handle and the trigger guard.

To whet your appetite even further, BSA is also releasing the CLX as a First Edition model in a walnut stock. This will
be a limited run of 200 rifles only, each individually numbered, not to be repeated and sold as a pack including an EMD 3-9×50 WR scope, a BSA silencer and a hard plastic carry case. The First Edition version costs £799, while the standard CLX in a beech stock has an RRP of £609, with both stock options being made by Minelli in Italy.
